Kutaisi Airport (KUT)
The drive from Mestia to Kutaisi International Airport (KUT) takes about 5 hours 20 minutes and covers roughly 216 km, descending the Enguri valley to Zugdidi and then crossing the lowlands east. It is the longest departure transfer we run, and the one where leaving enough time matters most.
The road between Mestia and Zugdidi is asphalted and perfectly manageable in a standard car, which surprises people who have read older accounts of Svaneti. What it is not is fast: it is a mountain descent with bends, single carriageway, and stretches where livestock and road works set the pace.
That is why five and a half hours is the honest figure rather than the four that a map might suggest. Building a flight plan on an optimistic number is the single most common way this journey goes wrong.
What this transfer covers
- Paved the whole way — no 4x4 needed for the Mestia–Zugdidi road
- One car from your Mestia guesthouse to the terminal, no changes
- The Enguri reservoir and dam on the descent
- Departures timed to your flight, including overnight
Leaving enough time
Work backwards: two hours at the terminal, five and a half on the road, and a real margin for a mountain route that can be blocked by weather, a rockfall or road works. Seven and a half to eight hours before departure is the sensible figure for leaving Mestia, and in winter more than that.
For a dawn flight, that arithmetic produces a departure from Svaneti around ten or eleven at night. Many guests prefer to come down the day before and sleep in Kutaisi or Zugdidi instead, and where that is possible it is the better plan by a wide margin.
- Allow seven and a half to eight hours before departure
- In winter, allow more — the descent can be slowed by snow
- Coming down the day before is usually the better plan
What the road is like
From Mestia the road follows the Enguri valley down past the reservoir and the dam to Zugdidi, then crosses the flat lowlands east towards Kutaisi. The mountain section is scenic and slow; the lowland section is quick and dull. Together they make a long day, and a break somewhere around Zugdidi is worth planning rather than improvising.
Winter changes the calculation. The road is normally kept open, but snow, ice and occasional closures are real possibilities between roughly November and March, and no schedule should assume otherwise. We will tell you the conditions as we know them rather than guess.
Turning the descent into a day
If the flight is late enough, the drive can absorb a stop. Zugdidi has the Dadiani Palace, and Martvili Canyon lies not far off the route east of it. Both turn a long transfer into a reasonable last day in Georgia rather than five hours of staring at the road.
With a tight flight, none of that applies and the deadline comes first. Tell us the departure time and we will say plainly whether anything fits — on this route more than any other, we would rather disappoint you at the booking stage than at the check-in desk.
How to get from Mestia to Kutaisi Airport (KUT)
| Option | Journey time | Departures | Drops you at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (Transfer Kutaisi) | About 5h 20m | 24/7, timed to your flight | The terminal, from your guesthouse door |
| Marshrutka to Zugdidi, then onward | About 7h–8h in total | Early morning departures, limited | Zugdidi, then separate legs to Kutaisi and the airport |
| Marshrutka direct to Kutaisi | About 7h | Not daily; seasonal | Kutaisi, then a separate airport leg |
Public departures from Mestia are early-morning and infrequent, and missing one can mean losing a day. On a route this long with a flight at the end, that risk is the reason most people book a car.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Mestia to Kutaisi Airport?
About 5 hours 20 minutes for roughly 216 km. Allow seven and a half to eight hours before your flight once check-in and margin are included.
Do you need a 4x4 from Mestia to Kutaisi?
No. The Mestia–Zugdidi road is asphalted the whole way and a standard car is fine. It is slow because it is a winding mountain descent, not because it is rough.
Should we come down the day before an early flight?
Usually yes. A dawn departure from KUT means leaving Mestia around 22:00 or 23:00. Coming down the previous day and sleeping in Kutaisi or Zugdidi is a far better end to a trip.
