Martvili Canyon
The drive from Tskaltubo to Martvili Canyon takes about 1 hour 5 minutes and covers roughly 48 km north-west into Samegrelo. Martvili is the canyon with the turquoise water and the short boat trips between its walls — the most photographed of the three canyons near Kutaisi and the easiest to walk.
Martvili is the gentlest of the region's canyons in terms of effort: the walkways are short, the site is compact and the boat trip does the work. That makes it the better choice for guests who want the scenery without the two-kilometre forest approach that Okatse requires.
The boat trips are short — a matter of minutes rather than an excursion — and queue in high season. Going early in the day is the practical answer, and it is worth saying so when arranging the pickup time.
What you'll see in Martvili Canyon
- Turquoise water running between limestone walls
- Short inflatable boat trips through the gorge
- Walkways and viewing platforms with far less walking than Okatse
- A waterfall and bathing area within the site
The boats, the queues and the water
The boat trip is the signature of the site and it is brief: a slow passage between the canyon walls and back. In July and August the queue can be considerably longer than the trip itself, and the water level determines whether boats run at all — after heavy rain they stop, and in a dry late summer the colour is at its most striking.
Everything else at the site is walkable in an hour or so. Bathing is possible in designated areas and the water is cold. Non-slip footwear is worth having; the walkways are damp and polished by use.
- Go early in high season — the queue outlasts the boat trip
- Boats stop running after heavy rain
- Walkways are damp; wear something with grip
What the road is like
The route runs north-west from Tskaltubo through the Samegrelo lowlands and up towards Martvili, paved throughout with a slower final section on regional roads. It is undemanding driving with no seasonal closures and no need for a special vehicle.
At just over an hour each way, this is a comfortable half day. Guests with a full day sometimes combine it with Okatse, though the two are in different directions from Tskaltubo and the combination makes for a long day of driving rather than a relaxed one.
Which canyon to choose
If you can only visit one, the honest split is this: Martvili for the water and the photographs with little walking, Okatse for the drama of the walkway and a proper forest walk. Martvili suits guests part-way through a treatment course; Okatse suits a free day and reasonable mobility.
Prometheus Cave is the third option and the one that is unaffected by weather. In a wet week it is the reliable choice, and it is fifteen minutes from Tskaltubo rather than an hour.
How to get from Tskaltubo to Martvili Canyon
| Option | Journey time | Departures | Drops you at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (Transfer Kutaisi) | About 1h 5m each way | Booked as a half day with waiting | The canyon visitor entrance |
| Marshrutka via Kutaisi to Martvili town | About 2h 30m in total | Daytime only | Martvili town, several kilometres from the canyon |
| Group tour from Kutaisi | A full day, often with Okatse | Seasonal | Fixed itinerary, starting from Kutaisi |
The marshrutka reaches Martvili town rather than the canyon, leaving a final leg to arrange on arrival — the same gap that exists at Okatse and Kinchkha.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Martvili Canyon from Tskaltubo?
About 48 km, roughly 1 hour 5 minutes by road north-west into Samegrelo.
Is Martvili or Okatse better?
Martvili for turquoise water, boat trips and very little walking. Okatse for the hanging walkway and a two-kilometre forest walk each way. Martvili is the easier of the two.
Do the boats always run?
No. They depend on water levels and stop after heavy rain. In high summer the queue can also be much longer than the trip, so going early helps.
