Tbilisi
The drive from Tskaltubo to Tbilisi takes about 3 hours 15 minutes and covers roughly 233 km, joining the main east–west highway near Kutaisi and following it across the country. It is the standard way to move from a spa stay in the west to the capital in the east.
Most guests making this journey have finished a course of treatments and are moving on to the capital for the rest of a trip. With three and a quarter hours of driving, the day is long enough to carry a stop without becoming exhausting, which is why so many of these bookings end up as half transfer, half tour.
The alternative — a local taxi to Kutaisi, then a marshrutka or train east — involves at least one change with luggage and a fixed departure time. It is cheaper and materially less comfortable.
What you'll see in Tbilisi
- Door-to-door from your sanatorium or hotel to any Tbilisi address
- Mtskheta, the old capital and a UNESCO site, sits almost on the route
- Gori and Uplistsikhe make a natural halfway stop
- One car the whole way, with no change in Kutaisi
What the road is like
The route runs south-east from Tskaltubo to join Georgia's main east–west corridor, then follows it through Zestaponi, past Gori and Mtskheta to the capital. Much of it is dual carriageway and it is the best road in the country. The slow section is the approach to Tbilisi, where traffic rather than distance sets the arrival time.
Nothing about the drive is seasonal. Heavy rain slows it, snow rarely affects this corridor, and a standard car is appropriate year-round. The quoted time assumes a straight run without stops.
Stops worth making on the way
Mtskheta is the obvious one — the old capital sits near the Tbilisi end of the route and takes an hour and a half comfortably, with Svetitskhoveli and Jvari the two things everyone comes for. Gori, with the Stalin Museum and Uplistsikhe nearby, works as a longer stop roughly halfway.
Adding either changes a transfer into a day, so it should be agreed at the booking stage rather than proposed at a junction. If you are checking into a hotel in Tbilisi the same evening, tell us the time you need to arrive and we will plan the stops around it rather than the reverse.
- Mtskheta: about 1h 30m, near the Tbilisi end
- Gori and Uplistsikhe: a longer stop, roughly halfway
- Agree stops before pickup — they change the shape of the day
Arriving in Tbilisi
Tbilisi is spread across both banks of the Mtkvari and drop-off zones differ substantially: Old Tbilisi, Sololaki, Vera, Vake and the station area are separate destinations rather than one centre. A map pin is worth more than an address, particularly for apartments in the older districts where vehicle access is restricted.
If the journey continues to the airport rather than the city, say so — Tbilisi airport is east of the centre and the route does not require crossing town, which makes it a shorter journey than most people assume.
