Prometheus Cave
Prometheus Cave at Kumistavi is about 7 km from Tskaltubo and roughly 15 minutes by road — the closest major sight to the spa town, and the obvious half-day trip for anyone staying there. The cave is a lit walking route through large chambers of stalactites and stalagmites, with an optional boat section at the end.
For guests on a treatment schedule, this is the trip that fits: fifteen minutes each way, an hour or so inside, and back in time for an afternoon appointment. Nothing else of comparable interest is that close to Tskaltubo.
The cave is cool all year — noticeably so in summer, when it is a relief, and genuinely cold in winter if you arrive in light clothing. A jacket is worth taking whatever the temperature outside.
What you'll see in Prometheus Cave
- A lit walking route of well over a kilometre through the cave system
- An optional boat ride out through the lower passage
- A constant cool temperature inside, whatever the weather outside
- Close enough to fit between treatments rather than filling a day
What the visit involves
Visits run as guided groups along a fixed lit route with steps and walkways, and the walk is over a kilometre in length. It is not strenuous, but it is not flat either, and the surfaces are damp. Shoes with grip matter more than they sound like they should.
The boat section at the end is optional, seasonal and dependent on water levels, so it is not something to promise a child in advance. Tour times and the last admission change through the year, and the site can be busy with coach groups in the middle of the day.
- Over a kilometre of walking, with steps and damp surfaces
- Take a layer — the cave is cool year-round
- The boat section is seasonal and not guaranteed
Fitting it around treatments
The practical advantage of this trip is that it fits into a morning or an afternoon rather than consuming a whole day. With the car waiting, the total time away from your sanatorium is usually around two to two and a half hours including the tour.
Guests with a free day often extend it: Okatse Canyon and the Gelati and Motsameta monasteries are all within about three quarters of an hour of Tskaltubo, and the cave pairs naturally with any of them. Say how much time you have and we will fit stops to it.
Getting there without a car
There is no useful scheduled service between Tskaltubo and Kumistavi. In practice visitors either arrange a taxi in the town or join a tour from Kutaisi, and the taxi option means negotiating a wait as well as a fare, since the cave is not a place where cars are circulating looking for a return fare.
That is why the car-and-wait booking is the normal arrangement here. The distance is small enough that it is an inexpensive trip; the difficulty is entirely about getting back.
How to get from Tskaltubo to Prometheus Cave
| Option | Journey time | Departures | Drops you at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (Transfer Kutaisi) | About 15m each way | Booked with waiting time | The cave visitor entrance |
| Local taxi from Tskaltubo | About 15m each way | On demand, daytime | The cave, with a wait to negotiate separately |
| Group tour from Kutaisi | Half a day | Seasonal, daily in summer | Fixed itinerary — starts from Kutaisi, not Tskaltubo |
Getting to the cave is easy and getting back is the problem: cars do not wait at Kumistavi for return fares, so the wait needs arranging before you go.
