Okatse Canyon
The drive from Tskaltubo to Okatse Canyon takes about 45 minutes and covers roughly 32 km north into the limestone country above Gordi. The attraction is a hanging walkway built along the canyon wall, reached by a walk of about two kilometres each way through forest from the visitor centre.
This is a half to full day rather than a quick trip. The walk in and out is the part people underestimate: it is not difficult, but it is real walking, and the site as a whole takes two to three hours before any driving.
For guests on a treatment schedule, that means blocking out a morning or an afternoon properly rather than trying to slot it between appointments the way Prometheus Cave allows.
What you'll see in Okatse Canyon
- A hanging walkway running along the canyon wall high above the floor
- Forest approach of roughly 2 km each way from the visitor centre
- Kinchkha Waterfall nearby, usually visited the same day
- Cool forest air — a good choice on a hot afternoon
What the visit actually involves
From the visitor centre the route runs roughly two kilometres through forest to reach the walkway, and the same distance back. A shuttle has operated on this section at times, but it is seasonal and should not be assumed. The walkway itself runs along the canyon wall well above the floor, which is the reason to come and also the reason some visitors turn back.
Opening hours differ between summer and winter, and the walkway can close at short notice in storms or ice. Confirming before travelling matters more here than on a city route, since there is nothing else at the site to salvage the trip.
- Two kilometres of walking each way before the walkway
- Allow two to three hours on site, plus the driving
- Storms and ice can close the walkway at short notice
Combining with Kinchkha
Kinchkha Waterfall is in the same area and the two are commonly done together, which makes a full day from Tskaltubo. The falls are at their best in spring and after rain and can run low by late summer, so in August the canyon is the more reliable half of the pair.
There is no useful public link between the two sites, which is why they are almost always visited by car. With the car waiting, the day works without any of the connection problems that make this area awkward to reach independently.
What the road is like
The route runs north from Tskaltubo through Kutaisi's northern edge towards Gordi, paved for the great majority of the way. The final approach is narrower and rougher — slow rather than difficult, and manageable in a standard car in normal conditions.
After heavy rain that last section deteriorates, and we will say so honestly rather than committing to conditions we cannot see. In poor weather Prometheus Cave is the sensible substitute, since it is indoors and far closer.
How to get from Tskaltubo to Okatse Canyon
| Option | Journey time | Departures | Drops you at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (Transfer Kutaisi) | About 45m each way | Booked as a half or full day with waiting | The visitor centre at Gordi |
| Taxi to Gordi from Kutaisi | About 1h from Tskaltubo with the change | On demand, daytime | Gordi, with the return to arrange separately |
| Group tour from Kutaisi | A full day | Seasonal | Fixed itinerary, starting from Kutaisi |
Public transport reaches Gordi rather than the sites, and the onward shuttle is seasonal. Most visitors arrive by car for exactly that reason.
