Mtskheta
Mtskheta lies about 210 km and 2 hours 50 minutes east of Kutaisi International Airport (KUT). It was Georgia's capital for around 800 years and remains the seat of the Orthodox Church. Its churches — Svetitskhoveli, Jvari and Samtavro — are inscribed together on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Mtskheta sits where the Aragvi meets the Mtkvari, about 20 km north-west of Tbilisi and directly on the main road east. It is the place where Georgia adopted Christianity in the fourth century, and the three churches that survive from that history were listed by UNESCO in 1994. Most visitors see the town in half a day.
Because Mtskheta is on the Kutaisi–Tbilisi highway, it works either as a destination in its own right or as a stop built into a transfer to the capital. We collect you at arrivals, allow the time you want at each church, and then continue to your Tbilisi or Mtskheta address.
What you'll see in Mtskheta
- Svetitskhoveli Cathedral — the 11th-century seat of the Georgian Orthodox Church
- Jvari Monastery, a 6th-century church on the hill above the Mtkvari–Aragvi confluence
- Samtavro Monastery, burial place of King Mirian III and Queen Nana
- The viewpoint at Jvari looking down over the two rivers meeting below
How long you need in Mtskheta, and when to arrive
Allow two to three hours for the town if you want to see Svetitskhoveli, Jvari and Samtavro without hurrying. Svetitskhoveli and Samtavro are a few minutes apart in the old centre and can be walked between. Jvari is a separate drive of about ten kilometres up the hill on the far side of the river, so it is not a walking option from the cathedral.
Jvari is typically open from about 09:30 until 17:30, so a late-afternoon arrival can leave too little time. Morning light suits the cathedral interior and the hill is quieter before the Tbilisi coaches arrive around midday. If you are flying in overnight, it is usually better to sleep first and visit Mtskheta the following morning than to arrive tired at the gate.
What to wear at Svetitskhoveli and Jvari
Both churches are working places of worship and the dress code is enforced, including in the cathedral yard rather than only inside the building. Shoulders and knees should be covered, and women are expected to wear a skirt and a head covering. Wraps and headscarves are usually available to borrow at the entrances, but bringing your own scarf saves queuing at a busy moment.
Services run through the day and photography inside may be restricted while one is in progress. The floors are stone and the cathedral is cool even in August, which is worth knowing if you have come from the coast in light clothing. Jvari, by contrast, stands exposed on a bare hilltop and is often windy, so a layer is useful there in any season.
Should you visit Mtskheta on the way to Tbilisi or as a day trip?
Mtskheta sits roughly 20 km short of Tbilisi, so adding it to an airport transfer takes less time than returning for it later. Budget an extra two to three hours on top of the direct drive and tell us before pickup, because it changes when you reach your hotel. This works badly if you have a same-day train, tour or restaurant booking waiting in the capital.
The alternative is to base yourself in Tbilisi and come back out for a half day, which suits travellers who want to add Jvari at sunset or combine Mtskheta with Uplistsikhe further west. Either shape works; the difference is luggage. On a transfer day your bags stay in the car, and Svetitskhoveli's yard is a short walk from where we can wait.
How to get from Kutaisi to Mtskheta
| Option | Journey time | Departures | Drops you at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (Transfer Kutaisi) | About 2h 50m | 24/7 — leaves when your flight lands | Svetitskhoveli, Jvari and any Mtskheta address |
| Airport shuttle bus to Tbilisi, then marshrutka from Didube | About 3h 30m–4h to Tbilisi, plus ~30m from Didube | Shuttles meet arriving flights; Didube vans roughly every 30 min, about 07:00–20:00 | Mtskheta town centre — nothing serves Jvari |
| Train from Kopitnari, then marshrutka from Didube | 3h 07m–3h 42m to Tbilisi Central, plus ~30m | 4 trains daily; first 08:51, last 19:26 | Mtskheta town centre — nothing serves Jvari |
If you are already staying in Tbilisi, the Didube marshrutka is a perfectly good way to reach Mtskheta — it runs about every half hour and takes roughly 30 minutes. Coming straight from Kutaisi Airport is the harder version: a shuttle or train to Tbilisi, the metro across to Didube, then the van, with luggage at every stage. It also leaves out Jvari, which sits about ten kilometres away up a hill with no public service at all. A private car earns its place on the Jvari leg, on night arrivals, and when Mtskheta is a stop on the way to Tbilisi rather than the destination.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Mtskheta from Kutaisi Airport?
About 210 km, roughly 2 hours 50 minutes on the main east–west highway. Mtskheta sits some 20 km before Tbilisi, so it adds very little driving to a capital transfer.
How long do I need to see Mtskheta?
Two to three hours covers Svetitskhoveli, Samtavro and Jvari at a comfortable pace. Jvari is a ten-kilometre drive from the cathedral and is usually open from about 09:30 to 17:30, so arrive by mid-afternoon.
Is there a dress code at the Mtskheta churches?
Yes. Shoulders and knees must be covered at both Svetitskhoveli and Jvari, and women need a head covering and a skirt below the knee. Wraps and scarves are normally available to borrow at the entrance.
