The wide dark-sand beach and Black Sea shoreline at Anaklia in Samegrelo, Georgia

Anaklia is about 94 km from Kutaisi International Airport (KUT), roughly 1 hour 45 minutes by road. It sits where the Enguri river meets the Black Sea in Zugdidi municipality, with some eight kilometres of dark sand and pebble beach and none of Batumi's crowds or high-rise skyline.

Anaklia is the quiet alternative to Georgia's better-known coast. The beach is wide, flat and long, backed by low buildings rather than towers, and outside July and August you can walk for a kilometre without meeting anyone. The sand is dark and coarse, mixed with pebbles, which is normal for this stretch of the Black Sea and shelves gently into the water.

Almost everyone who chooses Anaklia does so because Batumi is too busy for them. That is the honest reason to come, and it is a good one. What you trade away is nightlife, choice of restaurants and any guarantee that a particular place will be open. This is a seasonal resort, and it does not pretend otherwise once the summer ends.

What you'll see in Anaklia

What is actually open outside the summer?

Much of Anaklia shuts down out of season. The beach bars, the rental stands and a good share of the cafés and guesthouses operate for the summer and then close, and the evening scene goes with them. Winters on this coast are mild but wet, so the town is quiet, grey and largely empty. Anyone travelling between roughly October and May should confirm their accommodation is genuinely open before booking a transfer.

That emptiness is precisely the appeal for some travellers, and an off-season walk along eight kilometres of deserted beach is a real thing to do. But go with your expectations set correctly: assume you may need to eat where you are staying, and do not count on finding an open shop late in the evening. High summer, particularly July, is when the resort operates as a resort.

Anaklia as a stop on the way to Svaneti

Zugdidi is about 31 km inland, roughly 35 minutes away, and Zugdidi is the road head for Mestia and Upper Svaneti. That geography makes Anaklia useful as more than a beach: a night by the sea before the long mountain drive, or a flat, warm day to recover afterwards. The Dadiani Palace museum in Zugdidi fits neatly into either version of the plan.

Coming from the airport, the route runs west through Samegrelo rather than down the coast, so Anaklia is not on the way to Batumi and should not be treated as a stop en route. If you want both the Black Sea and the Caucasus in one trip, pairing Anaklia with Zugdidi and Mestia makes far more sense than pairing it with Adjara. Tell us the whole itinerary and we will sequence it sensibly.

The bridge, the port and what to expect on the ground

The Anaklia–Ganmukhuri pedestrian bridge is the town's landmark: 504 m of timber and steel across the mouth of the Enguri, completed in 2012 and described as the longest bridge of its kind in Europe. It is a pleasant twenty-minute walk out and back, and the best place to watch the river meet the sea. Cyclists use it too, and it is open in any season.

A deep-water port has been planned at Anaklia for well over a decade. The project has been awarded, cancelled and relaunched more than once, and articles about it date quickly, so we will not state its current condition here — check recent news rather than an old guide. On the ground it means occasional construction traffic and fencing near the shore, which does not affect the main beach.

  • Confirm your accommodation is open if travelling outside high summer
  • Pair Anaklia with Zugdidi and Svaneti, not with Batumi
  • Allow around 1h 45m each way from the airport

Frequently asked questions

How far is Anaklia from Kutaisi Airport?

About 94 km, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes by road through Samegrelo. It is a comfortable arrival-day transfer, and the route does not pass through Batumi or along the southern coast.

Is Anaklia worth visiting outside summer?

Only for the emptiness. Much of the resort closes out of season, including beach bars and many guesthouses. The 504 m pedestrian bridge and the eight-kilometre beach are there year-round, but services are not.

Can Anaklia be combined with a trip to Svaneti?

Yes, and it is the most sensible pairing. Zugdidi, the road head for Mestia and Upper Svaneti, is about 31 km inland — roughly 35 minutes from the Anaklia seafront.
