Ushguli
Ushguli is about 270 km from Kutaisi International Airport (KUT) and takes roughly 6 hours 45 minutes to reach, via Zugdidi, the Enguri valley and Mestia. It is a group of four villages at about 2,100 m in Upper Svaneti, protected by UNESCO since 1996.
Ushguli is not one village but four — Zhibiani, Chvibiani, Chazhashi and Murqmeli — strung along the Enguri headwaters beneath Shkhara, at 5,193 m Georgia's highest peak. Chazhashi alone preserves over 200 medieval structures, and it is the specific settlement UNESCO named when it inscribed Upper Svaneti in 1996. People live there year-round.
Nobody should treat this as an airport transfer. It is close to seven hours of driving in the best conditions, the last section is genuine mountain road, and there is no scheduled public transport at the far end. We run it as a two- or three-day trip with nights in Mestia or Ushguli itself, which is also the only way to see the place in decent light.
What you'll see in Ushguli
- Chazhashi, the UNESCO-listed village with more than 200 medieval Svan structures
- Lamaria church above Zhibiani, under the north face of Shkhara
- The walk from Ushguli up the valley toward the Shkhara glacier
- The Zagari Pass at 2,620 m on the summer road down to Lentekhi
Which road to Ushguli is open, and when?
There are two ways in and they are not interchangeable. The year-round route runs Kutaisi Airport to Zugdidi, then Mestia, then Ushguli: roughly 85 km, then 140 km up the Enguri valley, then 47 km on from Mestia. That last section was sealed in 2024 and now takes 60 to 90 minutes rather than the three to four hours it used to demand of a 4x4.
The short way is the Zagari Pass road, south from Ushguli through Lentekhi and Tsageri to Kutaisi — about 160 km and four hours, against 270 km and nearly seven the other way. The pass tops out at 2,620 m and is open only from late May to mid-October; it is closed the rest of the year for snow and avalanche risk. Mid-July to late September is the dependable window.
Do you need a 4x4 to reach Ushguli?
Not any more, on the Mestia side. The 47 km from Mestia was rebuilt in concrete and asphalt and finished in 2024, leaving only a short unsealed stretch near the village itself. The Zagari road from Lentekhi is also sealed now, with compacted gravel through the landslide-prone sections, and ordinary cars use it all summer. Clearance still helps, and a driver who knows the road helps more.
Winter is a different question. Ushguli is inhabited all year, but heavy snow can block the road from Mestia for days at a time, and there is no scheduled service clearing a path for visitors. Between roughly December and March a trip should be planned with slack in it and an acceptance that the last 47 km may not happen. We would rather say that in advance than turn round halfway.
How many days does Ushguli need?
Three is the honest answer from Kutaisi. Day one is the drive to Mestia — about 5 hours 20 minutes of road — with an evening for the towers and the Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography. Day two runs out to Ushguli and back, with time to walk up the valley toward the Shkhara glacier. Day three returns to the airport.
Two days works if you sleep in Ushguli rather than Mestia, which also gives you the villages without day-trippers. One day is not realistic in either direction. In high summer a loop is the elegant option: up the Enguri valley through Zugdidi and Mestia, and back over the Zagari Pass to Kutaisi, so you never repeat a kilometre of road.
- Plan three days from Kutaisi, or two with a night in Ushguli itself
- Use the Zagari Pass only between late May and mid-October
- Treat the final 47 km as conditional between December and March
