Katskhi Pillar
The drive from Kutaisi International Airport (KUT) to Katskhi Pillar takes about 1 hour 30 minutes and covers roughly 90 km east through Imereti. The pillar is a limestone monolith standing around 40 m above the surrounding ground, with a small church on its summit — one of the strangest sights in Georgia and an easy pairing with Chiatura ten minutes further on.
The summit church is not open to visitors. Access to the top is restricted to the monastic community, and the ladder is not something tourists climb — a point worth being clear about, since a good deal of what circulates online implies otherwise. What you visit is the complex at the base, and what you see is the pillar from below.
That still justifies the trip, particularly combined with Chiatura. But arriving expecting to go up leads to disappointment, and it is better to know before the drive than after it.
What you'll see in Katskhi Pillar
- The monolith itself, rising sheer from the valley floor with a church on top
- The monastery complex at the base, which is what visitors can actually enter
- The mining landscape of Chiatura a short drive further east
- A short stop that pairs well with a longer day rather than filling one
What you can actually see
The site at ground level includes a church and monastery buildings, and the pillar rises directly above them. Half an hour to forty-five minutes covers it comfortably. The interest is in the improbability of the thing rather than in a large complex to explore, so pairing it with Chiatura is what turns the drive into a worthwhile day.
It is an active monastic site with the usual expectations — covered shoulders and knees, quiet, and respect for the fact that people live here. Facilities are minimal, so bring water rather than relying on buying it at the site.
- The summit church is closed to visitors — you see the pillar from below
- Half an hour to forty-five minutes on site
- Pair with Chiatura to make the drive worthwhile
What the road is like
The route runs east along the main corridor and then turns north into the Kvirila valley towards Chiatura. It is paved throughout, with the usual mix of fast main road and slower regional sections. Nothing about it needs a special vehicle and nothing closes seasonally.
At about an hour and a half each way, this is a half-day minimum from the airport and a full day if Chiatura is included. It is a poor fit for a short layover and a good fit for a full free day, particularly for guests who have already covered the obvious Kutaisi sights.
Combining with Chiatura and the region
Chiatura is around ten minutes further on and is the natural second half of this trip. The two together — a monastic pillar and a Soviet manganese-mining town with aerial cableways — make one of the more unusual days available from Kutaisi, and a very different one from the canyons and monasteries most visitors see.
For guests continuing east, this direction leads on towards Gori and eventually Tbilisi, so the pillar can also be a stop on a cross-country transfer rather than a return trip. If you are moving between cities, mention it — adding a stop to a transfer you are already making is far better value than a separate day trip.
How to get from Kutaisi to Katskhi Pillar
| Option | Journey time | Departures | Drops you at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (Transfer Kutaisi) | About 1h 30m each way | Booked as a half day or day trip | The monastery car park at the base |
| Marshrutka to Chiatura, then a local taxi | About 3h in total from Kutaisi | Daytime services to Chiatura | Chiatura, then a separate taxi to the pillar |
| As a stop on a Kutaisi–Tbilisi transfer | Adds about an hour to the cross-country drive | On request | Continue east afterwards rather than returning |
The third option is usually the best value: if you are moving from Kutaisi towards Tbilisi anyway, the pillar costs an hour rather than a whole day.

Can you climb Katskhi Pillar?
No. The summit church and its ladder are restricted to the monastic community. Visitors see the pillar from the monastery complex at the base.
Is Katskhi worth the drive on its own?
