Motsameta Monastery
The drive from Kutaisi International Airport (KUT) to Motsameta Monastery takes about 40 minutes and covers roughly 28 km. Motsameta stands on a rock spur above a bend in the Tskaltsitela gorge, and its setting rather than its size is the reason to come — it is a small church in an extraordinary position, ten minutes from Gelati.
Motsameta means 'place of the martyrs', for the eighth-century Georgian brothers whose remains are kept in the church. The site is small — the church, a terrace and a short approach — and half an hour is usually enough, which is precisely why it works as the second stop of a morning rather than a destination on its own.
The approach road narrows on the final descent to the monastery, and in wet weather it is worth taking slowly. A standard car handles it in normal conditions, which is the case for almost all of the year.
What you'll see in Motsameta Monastery
- The cliff-top setting above the Tskaltsitela river gorge
- The shrine of the brothers David and Constantine, whose story gives the place its name
- Views along the wooded gorge from the terrace outside the church
- A quieter, less visited alternative to Gelati just up the road
Why it is nearly always paired with Gelati
Gelati and Motsameta sit on the same short loop out of Kutaisi and are around ten minutes apart. Gelati has the art and the history; Motsameta has the drama of the setting. Doing one without the other means driving most of the same road for half the reward, which is why almost every itinerary here covers both.
The natural order is Gelati first, while the light is good for the interiors, then Motsameta afterwards, when a viewpoint suits a lower sun better than a dark church does. If you only have time for one and you care more about photographs than frescoes, reverse that advice.
- Ten minutes from Gelati — plan them as a single half-day
- Half an hour on site is usually enough
- Gelati first for the interiors, Motsameta second for the light
The setting and the gorge
The Tskaltsitela gorge below the monastery is wooded and steep, and the terrace outside the church is the reason people linger. The name of the river translates as 'red water', tied to the same story of invasion and martyrdom that the monastery commemorates. It is a short visit, but it repays standing still for ten minutes rather than photographing the church and leaving.
As at Gelati, this is a functioning religious site: covered shoulders and knees, heads covered for women, and quiet inside. There is a small shop and rarely much else, so bring water in summer rather than relying on buying it.
Fitting it into an airport day
The round trip from the terminal, taking in both monasteries, comes to roughly three to four hours including the time on site. That makes it one of the few genuinely worthwhile things to do with a long layover or an awkward gap between check-out and an evening flight.
Guests with more time usually extend the same loop north-west towards Prometheus Cave and Tskaltubo, which returns towards the airport rather than doubling back. Tell us the total time available and we will fit the stops to it rather than the other way round.
How to get from Kutaisi to Motsameta Monastery
| Option | Journey time | Departures | Drops you at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (Transfer Kutaisi) | About 40m each way | 24/7, waits while you visit | The monastery approach |
| Taxi from Kutaisi city | About 15–20m each way | On demand | The monastery, usually with a wait arranged |
| On foot from the Gelati road | A steep 20–30m walk from the turning | Not applicable | Only sensible if you are already dropped nearby |
Motsameta has no useful public transport of its own. In practice it is reached by car as part of the Gelati loop.
