Rabati Castle (Akhaltsikhe)

Rabati Castle stands in Akhaltsikhe, about 180 km and 3 hours 15 minutes south-east of Kutaisi International Airport (KUT). The fortress dates to the 9th century, was rebuilt under Ottoman rule and now holds a mosque, an Orthodox church, a citadel and the Samtskhe-Javakheti History Museum inside one set of walls.

Akhaltsikhe means 'new castle', and the castle is why people stop here. Held by the Jaqeli family and then by the Ottomans from 1578, the site accumulated a mosque, a madrasa, a hammam, a church and a synagogue in the town below — the reason it is usually described as a monument to religious coexistence.

A state restoration in 2011 and 2012 rebuilt much of what you now walk through, which divides opinion: the walls are stable and legible, but a good deal of the stonework is new. Either way, it is the natural halfway point between Borjomi and Vardzia and the obvious place to break that journey.

What you'll see in Rabati Castle (Akhaltsikhe)

How the road to Akhaltsikhe actually runs

The practical route from Kutaisi is not the short line on a map. You take the main highway east to Khashuri, turn south into the Borjomi gorge and follow the river up to Akhaltsikhe, roughly 49 km and about 50 minutes beyond Borjomi. It is all asphalt, but the gorge section is narrow and slow, which is why 180 km takes over three hours.

Mapping apps sometimes offer the Zekari Pass instead, a direct mountain track south from Baghdati over the Meskheti range. It is unsurfaced, high and closed by snow for much of the year, and it is not a route for a loaded transfer vehicle. We use the Khashuri–Borjomi road year-round, which also makes Borjomi an easy stop for lunch or the mineral springs.

How long Rabati takes, and what closes when

Two hours covers the upper complex at a reasonable pace, including the mosque, the citadel and a circuit of the walls. The grounds are generally open daily from around 09:00 until about 20:00, so this is one of the few Georgian sites that still works late in the day. The lower part, with shops and cafés, stays open around the historic upper section.

The Samtskhe-Javakheti History Museum keeps shorter hours, roughly 10:00 to 18:00, and closes on Mondays, so a Monday visit means the fortress without the collection. The climb to the citadel is on steps and cobbles and the upper walls are exposed. In midsummer the stone holds heat well into the evening, which is another argument for a slightly later arrival.

Building Rabati into a southern Georgia itinerary

Rabati rarely justifies a return drive from Kutaisi on its own. It works best as one stop in a chain: Borjomi for the park and the springs, Rabati for the fortress, then Vardzia about 60 km further south-west up the Mtkvari valley. Done in a single day that is a long stretch of driving, and Vardzia usually ends up rushed.

An overnight in Akhaltsikhe or Borjomi solves it and opens two quieter additions: Sapara Monastery, about 10 km east on a rough but driveable track, and the observatory town of Abastumani in the hills to the north-west. Akhaltsikhe also sits close to the Turkish border at Vale, so it suits travellers leaving Georgia overland rather than flying back from Kutaisi.

  • Allow two hours for the upper complex, longer if the museum is open
  • Avoid Mondays if the history museum is part of the reason you are going
  • Reserve a full day or an overnight before adding Vardzia
  • Sapara and Abastumani are the quiet alternatives when the castle is busy

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Kutaisi Airport to Rabati Castle?

About 3 hours 15 minutes for roughly 180 km, going east to Khashuri and then south through Borjomi. Akhaltsikhe is about 49 km beyond Borjomi, roughly 50 minutes on a narrow gorge road.

How much time should we allow at Rabati Castle?

About two hours for the upper complex. The grounds usually open around 09:00 and stay open until roughly 20:00, but the history museum runs about 10:00 to 18:00 and shuts on Mondays.

Can Rabati Castle be combined with Vardzia in one day?

Yes, but it is a long day: Vardzia is about 60 km further south-west, another hour each way. Most guests prefer an overnight in Akhaltsikhe or Borjomi so neither site is rushed.
