Kutaisi to Racha — Private Transfer & Tours
Last updated

The drive from Kutaisi International Airport (KUT) to Ambrolauri, the main town of Racha, takes about 1 hour 50 minutes over roughly 100 km, crossing the Nakerala Pass at about 1,500 m. Racha is Georgia's quietest highland region — Nikortsminda Cathedral, the Khvanchkara wine villages and the upper valleys toward Shovi.
Racha sits north of Kutaisi behind a single forested ridge, which is why it stays so much quieter than the rest of western Georgia despite being the closest mountain region to the airport. The road climbs through Tkibuli, crosses the Nakerala Pass and drops into the Rioni valley at Ambrolauri, passing Nikortsminda Cathedral on the way.
Because the drive is under two hours, Racha works as a day trip in a way that Svaneti and Kazbegi do not. A comfortable day covers Nikortsminda, a wine cellar around Ambrolauri and a viewpoint or two. Anything in Upper Racha — Oni and the valleys beyond — is better with an overnight, and is seasonal.
What you'll see in Racha (Ambrolauri)
- Nikortsminda Cathedral, completed in 1014, with 16th- and 17th-century frescoes
- Ambrolauri and the Khvanchkara wine villages along the Rioni valley
- The Nakerala Pass at about 1,500 m and the view down over Lake Shaori
- Upper Racha beyond Oni — Ghebi, Gona and the Caucasus ridge, in summer only
When is Racha open, and what closes in winter?
Lower Racha — Ambrolauri, Nikortsminda, the Khvanchkara villages and the Shaori and Lajanuri reservoirs — is reachable all year on sealed road. Upper Racha is not. The villages beyond Oni, including Ghebi and Gona, are snow-bound through winter and their roads close; several are rough gravel even in summer, which is why a high-clearance vehicle is the sensible choice up there.
The practical season for the whole region is roughly June to early November. Hiking finishes by late October. Late October and early November bring the wine harvest and the autumn colour that Racha is photographed for. In deep winter the Nakerala Pass can hold snow and the day-trip itinerary shrinks to Nikortsminda and Ambrolauri, which is still a worthwhile outing.
Can you still visit Shovi?
Only partly, and it should be discussed before the day rather than added on the road. A landslide struck Shovi on 3 August 2023, killing 33 people and destroying much of the resort. Most of the site remains inaccessible and reconstruction is not finished. Vehicles can reach a small surviving cluster of buildings, but the walk up toward the Buba glacier is not currently possible.
We will take guests into Upper Racha and say honestly what is and is not open on the day. What we will not do is sell Shovi as a scenic stop as though nothing happened there. If your interest is high mountain scenery rather than the resort itself, the valleys around Oni and Ghebi hold it, and reaching them from Ambrolauri takes a good part of a day there and back.
What is worth stopping for between Kutaisi and Ambrolauri?
Nikortsminda Cathedral is the one unmissable stop. It was completed in 1014 under Bagrat III, stands on Georgia's UNESCO tentative list, and its interior carries dense 16th- and 17th-century frescoes including a Last Judgment. It sits directly on the road shortly before Ambrolauri, so it adds almost nothing to the driving time. The relief carving around its windows and drum is the detail most visitors remember.
Ambrolauri is the centre of the Khvanchkara wine area, made from the Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grapes grown in a handful of villages along the Rioni. Small family cellars are the norm rather than large estates, so visits are best arranged rather than improvised. Lake Shaori and the Lajanuri reservoir sit close to the same road and make good short stops in warm weather.
- Allow a full day for Nikortsminda, Ambrolauri and a cellar visit
- Ask about Upper Racha conditions before committing to Oni or Ghebi
- Late October and early November combine harvest and autumn colour

Frequently asked questions
How far is Racha from Kutaisi Airport?
Ambrolauri is about 100 km from Kutaisi International Airport, roughly 1 hour 50 minutes by road via Tkibuli and the Nakerala Pass. It is the closest mountain region to the airport.
Is Racha a day trip or an overnight?
Nikortsminda, Ambrolauri and a wine cellar fit comfortably into a day, since the drive is under two hours each way. Oni and Upper Racha need an overnight, and those roads are open roughly June to October.
Is the Shovi resort open after the 2023 landslide?
No, not as a resort. The landslide of 3 August 2023 destroyed much of it and most of the site is still inaccessible. Ask us what is reachable in Upper Racha before planning a day around Shovi.
