Gudauri

The drive from Kutaisi International Airport (KUT) to Gudauri takes about 4 hours 30 minutes over roughly 290 km, the last 100 km climbing the Georgian Military Highway. Gudauri is Georgia's largest ski resort, sitting at about 2,200 m below the Jvari Pass, and it is reachable year-round.

Gudauri is Georgia's main winter resort: roughly 80 km of groomed piste served by modern chairlifts running from 1,990 m up to 3,279 m on Kudebi and Sadzele, with wide open bowls above the tree line and heliskiing operators based in the village. The season normally runs from late December to mid-April, with the most reliable snow in January and February.

Most of our guests book Gudauri in winter with ski bags and a late flight, so we plan the run around the conditions of the day and leave when the aircraft lands rather than at a timetabled hour. In summer the same road carries walkers, paragliders and cyclists, and the resort makes a quiet base on the way to Kazbegi.

What you'll see in Gudauri

What the road to Gudauri is like in winter

The final climb starts at Mleta, where the Military Highway leaves the valley floor and turns into a sequence of hairpins and avalanche galleries to reach the resort at about 2,200 m. In settled weather the whole journey from the airport runs to about 4 hours 30 minutes. In snow, fog or after fresh falls it can take an hour longer, and vehicles are sometimes held while the ploughs work.

The closures travellers read about almost always affect the Gudauri–Kobi section north of the resort, between roughly kilometre 93 and 107, which is shut when avalanche risk is high. Gudauri itself usually stays reachable from the south even when the road onward to Stepantsminda is closed. The Roads Department publishes current restrictions at georoad.ge, and it is worth checking that page the evening before a winter transfer.

When should you leave Kutaisi Airport for Gudauri?

Daylight matters more than the clock on this route. The section above Mleta is best driven in the light, so a morning or early-afternoon departure is the comfortable option, especially between December and March. Leaving the airport by about midday puts the car on the final climb in daylight in midwinter, and it also avoids the late-afternoon build-up of freight traffic heading for the Larsi border crossing.

Night arrivals are common at Kutaisi and Gudauri can still be done, but it is a different drive: the lowland section is straightforward and the mountain section needs a slower pace. If your flight lands after dark in January or February, consider an overnight in Kutaisi or near Mtskheta and a fresh start, or accept a later arrival at the resort. We will say plainly if conditions make the same-night run unwise.

What you pass on the Georgian Military Highway

The Military Highway is the reason many people choose to make this a tour rather than a transfer. North of Mtskheta the road runs beside the Zhinvali reservoir and passes Ananuri, a fortified complex whose main churches date from the 17th century, roughly 70 km from Tbilisi. Both are natural places to stop, and neither adds much to a route that is already several hours long.

Above Gudauri the road reaches the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument, a curved viewing terrace on the edge of the Devil's Valley, and then the Jvari Pass, the highest point on the Military Highway. In summer the terrace is an easy stop; in winter it depends on conditions and on whether the section beyond the resort is open. Ask before assuming a viewpoint north of Gudauri will be reachable on the day.

There is no direct public transport from Kutaisi to Gudauri — both alternatives route through Tbilisi, and both are far cheaper than a car. If you land in daylight with light bags and time to spare, the marshrutka via Didube is a reasonable choice. It stops being reasonable with ski equipment: you cross Tbilisi between two stations, seats are not reserved, the last Gudauri vans leave in the late afternoon, and in low season the evening departures are often cut. A private car earns its place on night arrivals, when you are carrying skis or boards, and because it delivers you to the hotel door rather than to a roadside stop on a snowy highway.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the transfer from Kutaisi Airport to Gudauri?

About 4 hours 30 minutes for the roughly 290 km, of which the last 100 km follow the Georgian Military Highway. Allow an extra hour in snow or if the ploughs are working.

Does the road to Gudauri close in winter?

Gudauri itself stays reachable in almost all conditions. The closures announced for avalanche risk usually apply to the Gudauri–Kobi section north of the resort, on the way to Stepantsminda, not to the approach from Tbilisi.

Can you carry skis and snowboards from the airport?

Yes. Tell us how many ski or board bags you have when you ask for a quote, because a car that fits four people with suitcases will not always take four sets of equipment as well.
