Chiatura

The drive from Kutaisi International Airport (KUT) to Chiatura takes about 1 hour 25 minutes and covers roughly 99 km east along the Kvirila valley. Chiatura is a manganese-mining town built into a steep gorge, and it is known for the aerial cableways strung above it — a transport system built because the terrain left few alternatives.

Chiatura is a place for people interested in industrial and Soviet history rather than a conventional sight. The town is stretched along a narrow gorge with housing on ledges above it, and the cableways exist because walking between the levels is genuinely impractical.

Which cableway lines are running changes over time — some were closed, some rebuilt, and the situation is not static. We will tell you what is operating when you ask rather than promising a ride that may not be available on the day.

What you'll see in Chiatura

The cableways, honestly

The original Soviet network was famous partly for its condition, and much of it was taken out of service. Rebuilt lines have since operated, but availability varies and is not something to treat as guaranteed months ahead. If riding a cableway is the whole point of the trip for you, ask us to check close to the date.

Even with nothing running, the town is worth seeing: the towers, the cables and the layout of the settlement are visible whether or not a cabin is moving. But a visitor who has come specifically for the ride and finds the line shut will not be consoled by the view, so it is worth setting the expectation properly.

  • The town and the infrastructure are worth seeing regardless
  • Sturdy shoes: the ground is steep and uneven almost everywhere

What the road is like

The route runs east on the main corridor and then turns north up the Kvirila valley, paved throughout. It is straightforward driving with no seasonal restrictions, and at under an hour and a half each way it is comfortably a day trip from the airport or from Kutaisi.

The town itself is steep, and driving within it is slow. Distances that look short on a map take longer than expected because of the terrain, which is worth allowing for when planning how much you can see.

Making a day of it

Katskhi Pillar is ten minutes away and completes the day. The pairing works well precisely because the two are so different: a monastic pillar on a limestone monolith and a working industrial town in a gorge, within sight of the same valley.

Chiatura also sits on the way east, so it can be built into a Kutaisi–Tbilisi transfer rather than done as a return trip. For guests moving between the two cities, that is a considerably better use of the driving than coming back the way you came.
