Gori
The drive from Kutaisi International Airport (KUT) to Gori takes about 2 hours 10 minutes and covers roughly 162 km on the main east–west highway. Gori is best known as Stalin's birthplace and for the museum that still stands in the centre of town, and it is the base for visiting the rock-cut town of Uplistsikhe ten kilometres away.
Gori is an easy addition to a Kutaisi–Tbilisi journey rather than a destination most people travel to separately: it sits almost exactly on the route, so stopping costs a couple of hours rather than a day. Guests moving between the two cities very often do exactly that.
The Stalin Museum is a divisive place, and visitors should know what it is before going. It was built as a memorial and much of it still reads that way, with only limited treatment of the repressions. People come to it as a historical artefact in its own right — a museum about how a country remembered, or failed to remember, its past.
What you'll see in Gori
- The Stalin Museum, his preserved birth house and the armoured railway carriage
- Gori Fortress on the hill above the town centre
- Uplistsikhe, the rock-cut settlement a short drive east
- A natural halfway stop on the cross-country drive to Tbilisi
What the road is like
The route follows Georgia's main east–west highway for almost the entire distance, which makes it one of the faster long runs from the airport. It is dual carriageway for long stretches, with slower sections where the road passes towns. Traffic builds towards the Tbilisi end rather than around Gori itself.
Nothing about the drive is seasonal or technical, and a standard car is appropriate year-round. The quoted time assumes a straight run: adding Uplistsikhe or a meal stop changes the shape of the day, so it is better agreed before pickup than negotiated at a junction.
Gori and Uplistsikhe together
Uplistsikhe is around ten kilometres from Gori and is the stronger of the two sights for most visitors — a settlement carved into the rock, occupied from long before the Christian period. Allow an hour and a half to two hours there, with the caveat that the surfaces are worn stone and the site is exposed to both sun and wind.
Together, the museum, the fortress and Uplistsikhe make a full day from Kutaisi, or a long and rewarding stop on a transfer to Tbilisi. If you are doing this on a travel day with luggage in the car, say so — it changes where the driver can safely wait while you visit.
- Uplistsikhe is about 10 km from Gori; allow 1h 30m–2h there
- Museum, fortress and Uplistsikhe together make a full day
- On a travel day, tell us there is luggage in the car
As a stop rather than a destination
The best value on this route is almost always to build Gori into a transfer you are already making. A Kutaisi–Tbilisi journey with a stop here costs the price of the transfer plus the waiting time, rather than the price of a full return day trip out of the airport.
If you are travelling in the other direction — Tbilisi towards Kutaisi and a flight home — the same applies, with one caution: leave more margin than you think you need. A check-in deadline at KUT is not the place to discover that a museum visit ran long.
How to get from Kutaisi to Gori
| Option | Journey time | Departures | Drops you at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (Transfer Kutaisi) | About 2h 10m | 24/7 — leaves when your flight lands | Any address in Gori |
| Marshrutka from Kutaisi bus station | About 2h 30m plus the trip into Kutaisi | Regular daytime services | Gori bus station |
| Train on the main line | About 3h in total including the transfer to the station | A few services a day | Gori railway station |
| As a stop on a Kutaisi–Tbilisi transfer | Adds two to four hours depending on what you visit | On request | Continue to Tbilisi afterwards |
Gori is well served by public transport because it sits on the main line and the main highway. The private car earns its place here mainly when Uplistsikhe is included, since that final leg has no useful service of its own.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the transfer from Kutaisi Airport to Gori?
About 2 hours 10 minutes for roughly 162 km, almost all of it on the main east–west highway.
Can we stop at Gori on the way to Tbilisi?
Yes, and it is the most economical way to see it. Gori sits almost on the route, so a stop adds a couple of hours to a transfer you are making anyway rather than requiring a separate day.
How long do we need for Gori and Uplistsikhe?
Allow a full day if you want both properly: an hour or two for the museum and fortress, and an hour and a half to two hours at Uplistsikhe, plus the driving.
